Scratch Inhalant Allergy Testing and Desensitization

Scratch inhalant allergy testing is considered the gold standard for diagnosing inhalant and seasonal allergies. This diagnostic procedure is used to identify specific airborne allergens responsible for triggering allergic reactions in individuals. At Hunt Naturopathic Clinic Inc., this in-office test takes about an hour to identify allergen reactions.

During the test small amounts of common allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and animal dander are introduced onto the skin, usually on the forearm. A tiny scratch or prick allows the allergen to penetrate the skin’s surface. If the person is sensitive to a particular substance, a small raised, red bump will develop at the test site, indicating an allergic response.

After diagnosis, an individualized prescription is formulated. Once this is received the patients is given administration advice. Then after one month a follow up appointment is arranged to determine the initial results of the therapy.

Desensitization, also known as allergen immunotherapy, is often recommended for individuals who experience significant symptoms from inhalant allergies. This treatment involves administering gradually increasing doses of the offending allergens, with the goal of training the immune system to tolerate the allergens and reduce future reactions.

Studies over the past 20 years confirm SLIT as a safe and effective treatment for inhalant allergies leading to decreased sensitivity and improved quality of life for allergy sufferers. Common allergens tested include tree, grass, weed, ragweed pollens, dust mites, pet dander, and mould. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed.
