Drinking water is crucial for overall health.
The proper intake of water regulates body temperature, transports nutrients to cells, improves function of specific organs, lubricates joints, flushes waste from the body, prevents dehydration, and supports physical and cognitive function. It can also improve sleep, mood and digestion.
What is the amount of water to drink to maintain and improve health?
There are many sources of advice on this topic. My approach is based on body weight which is a more individualized method. I suggest 50% of body weight in ounces/day. Most of the water should be consumed in the earlier part of the day from breakfast to approximately 3pm to prevent frequent trips to the bathroom during sleep.
All beings on planet earth are exposed to exogenous toxins.
These toxins can cause a myriad of diseases and affect general health. Drinking clean water can dilute the concentration of these toxins and enhance the removal through the liver and kidneys.
Final Notes:
Just as with any therapeutic intervention, excessive water consumption is not advantageous and can actually be harmful. Taking too much of any medication, herbal supplement, or vitamins can negatively impact health, and the same caution applies to water intake. That’s why following the personalized approach outlined above helps prevent the risks associated with drinking more water than the body needs.
